About the artist

Fernando Barata is a Brazilian painter and image-maker, born in Rio de Janeiro and based in Paris since 1982.

For over four decades, his work has explored the transformation of images, developing a distinctive visual language rooted in painting while constantly engaging with the evolving nature of representation. Inspired by the energy, contrasts, and cultural density of Rio de Janeiro, his compositions are marked by vibrant color, layered forms, and a strong sense of movement.

From early on, Barata’s practice has been driven by a fundamental question: how does art respond to technological change?

Rather than resisting these shifts, his work proposes a critical integration of new tools and visual processes, using them as a means to expand the possibilities of painting itself.

Fernando Barata has exhibited extensively in Brazil, France, and internationally, with solo and group exhibitions in major cultural institutions, galleries, and art fairs, including the São Paulo Biennial, the Havana Biennial, the Musée d’Art Moderne in Rio de Janeiro, the Maison de l’Amérique Latine in Paris, and numerous galleries across Europe and Latin America.

A new chapter

This reflection has led Barata, over the past decade, to explore digital creation as a natural extension of his artistic research. Drawing from his own archive of paintings and drawings, he builds a personal image bank that becomes the foundation for new compositions - where memory, transformation, and invention converge.

Today, his latest body of work embraces artificial intelligence as part of this ongoing exploration. Far from a rupture, this evolution continues a long-standing inquiry into the nature of the image, opening new territories while remaining deeply connected to his original practice.

Each piece from this new series is produced on museum-quality fine art paper and features the artist's signature as part of the composition. Collector Editions are hand-signed and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. Conceived as an extension of his pictorial work, these editions reflect both a technical evolution and a deeper philosophical inquiry into the nature of creation in the digital age.

Through this dialogue between painting and technology, Fernando Barata continues to push the boundaries of his practice - where tradition and innovation coexist in a constant state of reinvention.
